Nard grows in the alpine and subalpine regions of the Himalayas in Nepal, China, and India. We obtain the raw material for our nard essential oil from Nepal, where we provide a much-needed source of income for collectors and distillers. How it works: Nepal Nard is a flowering plant from the valerian family. It grows in the Himalayas, at high altitudes between 3000 and 5000 m. The plant reaches about 1 meter in height and has small, pink, bell-shaped flowers. Nard is an endangered plant, so there are regulations limiting the quantity and frequency of harvesting. The nard harvested for our oil fully complies with these regulations. We understand the importance of protecting it and want to ensure that this plant will be available for future generations. The dark green essential oil is extracted from the rhizomes of nard, which are the underground stems of the plant. Generally, roots start from the rhizome. The harvest season is very short, usually lasting only 15-20 days. After harvesting, the nard rhizome is cleaned and left to dry for a few days before being distilled. Increg supplier capacity in Nepal: doTERRA contributes to increg supplier capacity, supporting farmers, producers, and distillers through training and financial support. Together with our partners in Nepal, we are actively involved in facilitating supply chain improvements and programs for nard. We have worked with our partners to develop best practice manuals and then conducted training programs on this topic. Also, together with our partners, we have created nurseries and demonstration crops to test nard cultivation methods (always in accordance with regulations set by the Nepalese government and CITES). These initiatives contribute to the protection and optimal use of this wonderful resource.
