Difficulty: 4. Designed by the famous engineer Mario Castoldi, the Macchi MC 200 represented a major change in the production of Italian fighter planes.
Compared to the biplanes Fiat CR 32 and Fiat CR 42, which formed the main body of Italian fighter squadrons at the beginning of World War II, the Macchi MC 200, along with its contemporary Fiat G 50, was characterized by a monoplane structure and a metal construction.
The Fiat A.74 RC 38 radial engine with 14 cylinders in a double star could develop 840 horsepower, allowing the Macchi to reach a speed of 500 km/h.
Compared to the Allies' fighter planes, these performances were still insufficient, and its firepower was also lower.
The two Breda-SAFAT 12.7 mm machine guns mounted above the distinctive engine nacelle represented the standard armament.
In later versions, two more Breda-SAFAT 7.7 mm machine guns were added in the wings.
